The Election Campaign Finance Compliance Audit Committee is an adjudicative body established to examine instances where election participants (including candidates, third party advertisers, and campaign contributors), appear to have contravened rules and limits established within the Municipal Elections Act, 1996, as amended.

The Town is currently seeking qualified applicants to serve on the Election Campaign Finance Compliance Audit Committee for the 2018-2022 Council term.

The role of Committee members includes, but is not limited to:

  • Attending a training session to learn about relevant municipal legislation and case law
  • Reviewing applications for an audit of a municipal campaign, and granting or rejecting audit requests
  • Where an audit is granted, appointing an auditor and reviewing the audit report, and deciding whether legal proceedings shall be commenced
  • Reviewing instances where campaign contributors appear to have exceeded established contribution limits to municipal campaigns, and deciding whether to pursue legal action where a contravention is apparent

The Committee will convene at least two times: once for a training session, and again to consider a report from the Town Clerk identifying any instances of apparent "over-contributions" to campaigns. The Committee will not meet again unless there is further business arising from identified instances of over-contributions, or if an application for a compliance audit is submitted to the Committee.

Applicant Qualifications:

  • 18 years of age or older
  • Impartial and neutral with respect to their ability to fulfill their duties
  • Preference will be given to persons with applicable experience and expertise in the following areas: accounting and auditing; law and law enforcement; academics from related fields such as political science or local government administration, or other individuals with knowledge of the campaign finance rules under the Municipal Elections Act
  • Preference will be given to candidates who reside in the Town of Ajax

The following individuals are ineligible for a position on this committee:

  • Employees or Council members of the Town of Ajax
  • Persons who intend to be registered candidates or third party advertisers in the 2018  municipal election
  • Persons who intend to contribute to or provide services to the campaign of a registered candidate or third party advertiser in the 2018 Ajax Election


  • $200 following appointment as a retainer, and for ongoing review of background material
  • $100 for each committee meeting or training session lasting four hours or less
  • $200 for each committee meeting or training session lasting greater than four hours
