Taxicab By-Law Review

The Town of Ajax is completing a thorough review of the Taxicab Licensing within the Town in an effort to ensure that our By-law properly addresses the needs of the public. In order to fulfill this, staff are hosting public meetings in June and July at Town Hall and are looking for public input. Please take the time to participate in this process and complete the online survey. The feedback and information collected from residents and patrons of transportation services in Ajax will be used to determine the direction of future licensing and regulatory requirements.

By-law Enforcement and Animal Enforcement

By-law Services is divided into two sections - By-law Enforcement and Animal Enforcement.

All Staff respond to complaints of possible violations of the Town's Bylaws, including Property Standards, Dog and Cat, Trade Licensing such as Taxicabs and Refreshment Vehicles and the Traffic By-law.

What is a By-law?

A By-law is a Municipal Law passed under the authority of a Provincial Act. By-laws are the laws that govern Towns, Cities and Villages. The majority of Municipal By-laws are passed under the authority of the Municipal Act, Building Code Act, & Planning Act. Some other Acts that play a part in the animal field are the Dog Owner's Liability Act, Pounds Act, Health Protection & Promotion Act, Fish & Wildlife Conservation Act, etc.

Why do we have By-laws?

The Town passes By-laws for many reasons. These reasons include:

  • to ensure public safety;
  • to eliminate public nuisances;
  • to set up a system for licencing;
  • to set minimum standards of property maintenance.

Complaint Process

Ajax By-law receives in excess of 4000 By-law complaints a year. For this reason alone we do not accept anonymous complaints. All complaints, including emails, must contain the complainant's name, address and phone number prior to a complaint being generated.

Complaints can be sent to the Town in writing at 65 Harwood Avenue South, by phone at 905-619-2529 ext. 3370, by fax at 905-683-1061, online filing, or by email at bylawservices@ajax.ca .

Once a complaint has been generated it is assigned to the appropriate staff to investigate. The Officer has a specific timeline to respond to a complaint depending on the type of complaint. At the conclusion of the initial response, staff will deem the complaint to be valid or not. If the complaint is deemed to be not valid, the complaint will be closed and no further action will be taken.

If the complaint is deemed valid, the Officer will follow the appropriate departmental policies, procedures, and practices to gain compliance. If the complainant wishes an update to the complaint, he / she can call By-law Services at 905 619-2529 ext 3370, (live answer) Mon-Fri, 8:30am to 4:30pm.
