Councillor Joanne Dies - Town of Ajax

Councillor Joanne Dies - Ward 3

Joanne lives with her husband and two children in south Ajax. She is a certified dental assistant and has worked in the field of dentistry for 22 years. Joanne has been an active community volunteer for more than 20 years. She brought along 11 years of community experience to the Council when she was elected as Councillor for Ward 3 in 2003.

As an environmentalist, she works to protect Ajax's green space and parks while fighting to protect the Ajax waterfront. Joanne has been co-chair of PACT-POW, Pickering Ajax Citizens Together Protecting our Water, since 2012. This grassroots organization successfully made the algae issue on the waterfront the number one issue in the provincial election.

A proven advocate for Ajax's history and built heritage, she initiated "Doors Open" and supported the Heritage Conservation District in Pickering Village.

As one of the founding members and past president of the Pickering Concert Community Band, Joanne became active in promoting cultural arts in the community. She is a past member of the PineRidge Arts Council, and helped organize the first Juried Art Show for Durham artists and Artfest on the Esplanade.

Joanne was also very committed to public education. She was the former Durham liaison for People for Education, the School Community Council (SCC), Chair at Duffin's Bay Public School and a member of the Durham District School Board SCC Steering Committee and Special Education Review Committee. Joanne is also the past chair and member of the Ajax Cultural Arts Advisory Committee, and past president of the Board for Community Development Council Durham.
