Mayor Steve Parish - Town of Ajax

Mayor Steve Parish

Steve Parish was appointed as Mayor of the Town of Ajax in December 1995. He is the longest serving Mayor in the Town's history, having been re-elected to the position in each Municipal Election from 1997 to 2014.

A recognized municipal leader on issues of sustainability, Mr. Parish is an outspoken advocate for environmental concerns. In 2000, he championed the adoption of an environment-first Official Plan by the Town of Ajax. He is a proponent of the Province of Ontario's Greenbelt initiative, and successfully advocated that all of the Town's non-urban lands be placed in the Greenbelt. He presently serves as Co-chair of Municipal Leaders for the Greenbelt.

Mr. Parish is a champion of Ajax's unique, picturesque and publicly-owned waterfront, and has fought tirelessly for the elimination of nuisance algae along Ajax's nearshore. As an engaged member of the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative, he actively sought the opportunity to showcase Ajax's water advocacy work by hosting their 15th annual meeting and conference in Ajax.

An avid cyclist and cross-country skier, Mr. Parish can often be seen cycling around Ajax. He continues to support the development of a connected, multi-modal transportation system to provide transportation options and encourage tourism.

Looking to the future, Mr. Parish envisions smart, transit-supportive and resilient growth throughout our community. A key component of a redeveloped and thriving downtown is the highly anticipated vision at Pat Bayly Square development, which will showcase Ajax's storied history including a monument to recognize women war workers.

Mr. Parish has lived in Ajax all his life. His father, Bill Parish, was a member of the Town's first Council, and subsequently served as Mayor from 1958 to 1963. A graduate of Ajax High School, he holds a BA in history from York University and an LLB from Osgoode Hall Law School. He was called to the Bar of Ontario in 1978. Mr. Parish retired from actively practicing law in September 2006.

Parish Vision for Ajax

Mayor Parish wants to see Ajax have the finest quality of life of any municipality in the GTA and in the entire Province of Ontario. It is his goal to see Ajax promote and develop a strong industrial base to provide balanced assessment and good jobs. He wants to preserve and enhance our waterfront, creek valleys and natural areas so that all residents of Ajax, their children and grandchildren can experience the natural environment close to home. Mayor Parish believes strongly in the Town's Official Plan and its goal to keep separate the areas that are open to urban development and those that are preserved in a rural state. He wishes to see Ajax develop and be a 'smart growth' community in the true meaning of that phrase.Hewants to see an Ajax where people can live in safe and secure neighbourhoods and where they have access to the broadest range of first class amenities. Heis a strong believer in the principal of good planning and the ideals set out in the Town's Official Plan and feels strongly that the Council and the people of the Town of Ajax must support these principles in order to realize this vision of a first class community.
