Pitbull Information

In 2005, the Province of Ontario amended the Dog Owner's Liability Act (D.O.L.A.) by passing Ontario Regulation 157/05, being a regulation to establish pit bull controls. This legislation places very specific requirements on the owners of pit bulls. These requirements include but are not limited to:

  • Every pit bull (both males and females) must be sterilized by a licensed Veterinarian

  • Every owner of a pit bull shall ensure that the pit bull is leashed and muzzled at all times unless:

    • the restricted animal is within enclosed property occupied by the owner of the restricted animal; or

    • the restricted animal is within enclosed property occupied by a person who consents to the restricted animal being off leash and/or without a muzzle.

The D.O.L.A. defines a pit bull as:

  • a pit bull terrier

  • a Staffordshire bull terrier

  • an American Staffordshire terrier

  • an American pit bull terrier, or

  • a dog that has an appearance and physical characteristics that are substantially similar to those of dogs referred to in any of the above bullets.

    • The following is a list of characteristics that Ajax Animal Services uses to determine if a dog has an appearance and physical characteristics that are substantially similar to a pit bull:

      • Muscular, well defined, lean muscle in chest, shoulders, cheeks, neck and legs

      • Broad, deep muscular chest

      • Wide-set eyes, usually round or almond shaped

      • Brick-like head with broad flat skull

      • Wide stance

      • Strong, wide jaw with large mouth

      • Short, thick glossy coat

      • Medium length, tapered tail

    • It is the investigating Officer's final determination as to whether or not the dog is deemed to be a pit bull.

Exemption

Ajax Animal Services will accept our Pit bull Waiver signed by an Ontario Licenced Veterinarian, stating that the dog in question is not a "pit bull" as defined in D.O.L.A., including the "has an appearance and physical characteristics that are substantially similar to..." clause.

Leash Free Parks

While pit bulls are welcome at leash free parks, they must remain leashed and muzzled at all times while visiting the park.
