Ajax Accessibility in Action Plan

The Ontarians with Disabilities Act (ODA), 2001 requires all municipalities in Ontario to prepare an annual Accessibility Plan and make it available to the public.

A second piece of legislation, the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) was enacted in 2005 to further qualify the ODA and serve as a framework for the creation of accessibility standards in five focus areas: customer service, information & communications, employment, transportation and the built environment.

In July 2011, the Integrated Accessibility Standards Ontario Regulation 191/11 came into force, combining standards in several of the accessibility focus areas. The Regulation also calls for a shift from the development of an annual to a multi-year accessibility plan. Annual progress reporting and content updates to the plan will continue.

The Town of Ajax develops its accessibility plan in consultation with the Accessibility Advisory Committee (AAC). The transition from annual to long-term planning will assist staff in implementing and forecasting projects through a diversity and customer service lens.
