Carbon Monoxide (CO) Detectors

Carbon monoxide detectors are required to be installed near all sleeping areas.

  • Choose a detector approved by a group such as Underwriters Laboratories of Canada (ULC).
  • Carbon monoxide detectors can be bought at home supply stores or anywhere else you buy smoke alarms.
  • Follow the instructions that come with the detector.

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colourless, odourless, deadly gas. Because you cannot see, taste or smell it, carbon monoxide can kill you before you know it's there.

Symptoms of Carbon Monoxide:

  • dizziness
  • headaches
  • vomiting
  • watering eyes
  • eventually weakness and death by suffocation

How to Protect your Family:

  • have your furnace and heating system inspected once a year by a heating specialist
  • have your chimney and flue cleaned professionally
  • make sure burner flames on furnaces and stoves are blue - not yellow-orange
  • never run a car or any gasoline engine in an enclosed space
  • never use a barbeque in an enclosed area such as in your house or garage
