Environment

The Town of Ajax prides itself on an "Environment First" policy, and is continuously making positive changes within our corporation to lead by example. Municipalities have an important role to play in reducing their contributions to climate change, given their legislated powers and the types and level of services provided to citizens. Not only can local governments take corporate action in municipal operations, they have access to a wide-range of tools to encourage other sectors within their jurisdiction to take action on items like air quality, energy consumption and climate change.

Municipalities can help bring about positive changes through:

• regulatory tools such as growth management policies, bylaws, licenses, zoning and permits;
• motivating action by demonstrating leadership in the community; and
• engaging the community in education and awareness initiatives.

Through the Town's Community Action Plan a number of additional environmental guidelines have been identified. In this Plan, Council has selected "Leader in Environmental Sustainability" as one of four Strategic Objectives, where " As an innovative leader, Ajax is committed to environmentally responsible practices while working with residents and businesses to reduce the Town's environmental footprint in a cost effective manner." The Town of Ajax is at the forefront of a number of environmental issues and we are striving to demonstrate leadership in sustainability and reduce our environmental footprint through numerous actions.
