Seasonal Services

Snow Removal

During and after a snow storm, the Town of Ajax has the responsibility of maintaining 370 km of road, 150 km of sidewalks, trails and emergency access road, 27 parking lots and 53 school crossings, all in an effort to provide efficient and effective snow clearing services to ensure the safety of the traveling public.

The Town of Ajax is committed to providing a high level of snow removal service throughout the winter season. Using a combination of Town staff and contractors, plowing and salting is performed each winter with consideration to safety of both the public and the environment.  The Town of Ajax also follows a Salt Management Plan to ensure care to our roadways, trails and natural environments are always a consideration.

Driveway Clearing Tips

With several thousand driveways, it is not practical for plow operators to lift their blades at every driveway. The plow operator also has limited control over the amount and direction of snow that comes off the plow. When clearing your driveway we suggest our residents follow the procedure suggested in the video below:

Alternatively,  pile the snow on the right side (standing in your driveway and looking towards the street). This can help reduce the amount of snow that is pushed onto your driveway when a snow plow passes.

Levels of Service

The Town of Ajax has developed levels of service to help clear roadways, sidewalks, crossings and parking lots in the event of a snowfall.  Plowing crews are dispatched once there is approximately 5cm of snow that has fallen.  Which streets, sidewalks, parking lots and crossings get plowed first is decided on a pre-determined level of priority.

Priority 1 - Main Roads Cleanup must be completed approximately 10 hours after end of snowfall
Priority 2 - Collector Roads and Bus Routes Cleanup to be completed approximately 12 hours after end of snowfall
Priority 3 - Secondary Local Roads and Laneways Cleanup to be completed approximately 16 hours after end of snowfall
Priority 1 - Main Sidewalks & Trails Clean up to be completed after the end of a snowfall to maintain pedestrian pathways
Priority 2 - Secondary Sidewalks & Trails Clean up to be completed after the end of a snowfall to maintain pedestrian pathways

The Day After

Following each snow plowing event, a clean-up process follows where additional plowing is completed to further clear the roadway as well as re-salt the roads if necessary.

Winter reminders

Onstreet Parking
Residents are reminded to move all vehicles out of the roadway during a snowfall.  On-street parking during a snow event is not permitted at any time of the day or night. If you park on the street during a snow event, your vehicle will be ticketed and may be towed. On-street parking during a snow event can severely slow down route clearing, and in some cases, stops snow clearing all together.

Residents are responsible for removing ice and snow from sidewalks fronting or beside their homes within a 24 hour period after a snowfall. By keeping the sidewalks clear, it helps to ensure that all pedestrians, especially those using walkers, scooters and strollers, will be safe.

The Town of Ajax does not remove snow from the end of driveways. Only qualified seniors and the disabled may apply to be in the Snow Removal Program.

Super Mailboxes
The Town of Ajax does not perform snow removal operations around super mailboxes. Please contact Canada Post or by phone at 1-800-267-1177 for snow removal in this area.
