Ajax Council approves 2015 Budget
Budget invests in a number of important priority areas, maintains 2.75% tax increase

With the approval of the $29.5 million 2015 Capital Budget on January 12 and the $49.4 million 2015 Operating Budget on February 9, Ajax Council has formally concluded the 2015 Budget process and set its first budget of the 2015-2018 term.

"The 2015 Budget strikes the right balance between spending and investing," said 2015 Budget Chair Councillor Joanne Dies. "All of the investments strategically align with current priorities and will build capacity over the term in many key areas such as roads, traffic, youth unemployment, diversity and community engagement, and social infrastructure."

The budget maintains a 2.75 per cent property tax rate increase established by Council in December 2014. This will result in a $35.62 tax increase for an average home assessed at $348,000.

Budget highlights include:
- Funding for four new full-time staff, including a Transportation Technologist and a Diversity Specialist, to advance work in key priority areas.
- $260,000 to fund key social infrastructure initiatives through the Rouge Valley Hospital Foundation grant, the Ajax Community Fund and the Town's IMPACT Ajax Fund.
- Realignment and widening of Rossland Road to five lanes from Southcott Road to west of Church Street, and the installation of streetlights along Westney Road and intersection improvements at Westney Road and Rossland Road. More than half or $17.3 million of the overall capital program will be spent directly on roads, sidewalks and streetlights.
- Design of future phases/amenities for Audley Recreation Centre. Will allow work to begin on the future redevelopment of the Pickering Village Complex.
- New Youth Entrepreneur & Employment Program to combat the Ajax youth unemployment rate of 19%. This project is designed to provide youth training, mentoring and business experience.

"This budget maintains and in some cases increases services levels," said Rob Ford, Interim Chief Administrative Officer. "We continue to ensure we are spending and investing wisely - the taxpayer expects and deserves this."
