Ajax Fire and Emergency Services would like to remind residents of summer safety tips to prevent a fire from happening on your deck or porch.

Quote

“Please remember to keep your BBQ grill away from deck railings, wood fencing and vinyl siding. If you smoke, please use a proper ashtray or metal container and not a flower planter to extinguish cigarette butts and other smoking materials.” - Shelley Langer, Fire Prevention Inspector, Town of Ajax

Quick Tips

  • The grill should be placed away from the home and out from under eaves and overhanging branches.
  • The area behind your BBQ must be free of anything that can ignite – this is where hot gases escape.
  • Propane and charcoal BBQ grills should only be used outdoors.
  • Never leave the BBQ unattended when in use.
  • Make sure grease does not build up on the burners or at the base of the BBQ. This could cause a grease fire.
  • When finished barbecuing, turn the gas valve off first, then turn off the burner controls so no gas is left in the connecting hose.
  • Allow the BBQ to cool completely before closing the cover.
  • Don’t extinguish cigarettes in plant pots. They often contain peat moss, shredded wood & bark that can easily ignite. Use a proper ashtray or a metal container to extinguish smoking materials.
