Ajax Fire and Emergency Services would like to remind residents of summer safety tips to prevent a fire from happening on your deck or porch.

“Always position BBQ’s well away from deck railing, wood fences and vinyl siding to reduce fire risk. Always ensure your grill is clean and never leave it unattended while in use.” - Melissa Balson, Public Educator, Ajax Fire and Emergency services
Quick Tips
- Place your grill on a level surface away from the home, deck railings, eaves and overhanging branches.
- Keep the area behind your BBQ clear — this is where hot gases escape.
- Propane and charcoal BBQ grills should only be used outdoors.
- Regularly clean the burners and base to prevent grease fires.
- After barbecuing, turn off the gas valve first, then the burner controls to prevent gas from remaining in the hose.
- Let the BBQ cool completely before closing the lid.
- Avoid extinguishing cigarettes in flowerpots or planters, they often contain peat moss, shredded wood and bark that can easily ignite. Use a proper ashtray or a non-combustible metal container instead.
