Ajax Fire and Emergency Services (AFES) is asking building owners and property managers to regularly inspect their buildings for any tampering with fire department connections (FDCs) used during emergency responses.

These life-safety FDCs are being targeted by thieves for resale, often without the knowledge of property owners or managers. Such actions impede Ajax Fire’s ability to respond effectively to fire emergencies, putting lives and property at risk.

FDCs are a critical part of a building’s fire protection system. These connections allow firefighters to supply water directly into a building’s sprinkler or standpipe system during an emergency.

Please notify AFES of any removed or damaged FDCs and report any issues or video footage to Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS).

Quote

“Vandalism to fire department connections is not just property damage, it’s a serious public safety issue. These systems must work immediately when firefighters arrive in an emergency, and any tampering can cost valuable time.” - Kevin Vaughan, Chief Fire Prevention Officer, Town of Ajax
