Marriage Licence Application Requirements:

Process: Book an appointment. You can submit your application and book your appointment online here.

Appointments- Marriage licence applications are processed only between the time of 9am until 4pm and are not processed between 12-2pm.

Submit your application online. It can take from 10 to 30 minutes to process your marriage licence application. Online marriage licence submissions reduce the amount of time you will wait to obtain your licence.

Please note, make an appointment to pick up your marriage licence. Without an appointment you may be asked to come back another day if staff are not available to process your request. 

A marriage licence application must be completed and signed by both applicants. Bring the signed application with you to your appointment. Please note that original signatures are required. We do not accept digital signatures.  At least one applicant needs to be present to process the application. Two pieces of approved Identification is required for both parties, regardless whether both parties are present at the time the licence is processed.

Accepted Forms of Identification
Two pieces of government issued identification are required from each applicant. One piece of identification must include a photo, date of birth and signature. The following government issued identification are acceptable;
  • Government issued birth Certificate including any change of name certificates
  • Valid Passport
  • Valid Driver's Licence
  • Valid Ontario photo card
  • Canadian Citizenship Card
  • Record of Immigrant Landing
  • A certificate of Indian Status (status card)

* Health cards and SIN cards are NOT an acceptable form of identification.

The issuer will take a copy of the identification provided and attach it to the marriage licence application. Only original documents or certified true copies will be accepted.

Civil Ceremonies and Available Bookings

Exchange your wedding vows in a non-denominational setting. Ceremonies are performed within the spacious Town of Ajax Council Chambers, 65 Harwood Avenue South, on select Friday afternoons.

  • 2024 Ceremony fee is $395.50 (tax included)
  • New Ceremony fee 2025 is $405.44 (tax included)
  • First rescheduling of ceremony is free, each additional is $56.40 (tax included)
  • Booking a ceremony: in person booking only

Couples interested in booking a Civil Marriage Ceremony must submit in person a completed Town of Ajax Booking Agreement (available at Town Hall), along with the ceremony fee paid in full. Ceremonies are a booked service requiring advance reservation. Couples are required to attend a pre-meeting consultation two weeks prior to the ceremony. A valid Ontario Marriage Licence is required for all ceremonies and must be submitted at the pre-meeting.

The pre-meeting and wedding date will be confirmed upon receipt of payment. This fee includes the Officiant appointed by the Town to perform the ceremony and the use of the Council Chambers for the ceremony.

The pre-meeting will be with the Municipal Clerk's Designate who will discuss final details of the ceremony at least two weeks prior to the ceremony.

Age Requirements
Both applicants must be 18 years of age or older. Applicants 16 or 17 years of age require parental consent. Additional documentation requiring the signature of a parent or guardian must be obtained from the Corporate Services Department. Applicants under the age of 16 may not marry in the Province of Ontario.
Additional Requirements If Re-marrying After Divorce
If an applicant was divorced in Canada, the original or court certified true copy of the Decree Absolute or Certificate of Divorce must be provided with their licence application. Certified true copies may be obtained from the court that granted the divorce for a nominal fee.
