Periods of heavy rainfall can quickly overwhelm drainage systems, leading to localized flooding on roads, in low-lying areas and near rivers or creeks. Even areas that do not typically flood may experience water accumulation during intense downpours, creating hazardous conditions for both drivers and pedestrians.

Rising water levels in creeks, streams and retention ponds present serious safety risks during and after heavy rainfall. Fast-moving water, unstable banks and hidden debris can make these areas extremely dangerous. Residents are urged to keep a safe distance and closely supervise children and pets, as even shallow or slow-moving water can quickly become hazardous.

Residents are urged to remain cautious when traveling. Heavy rain can also impact visibility and increase the risk of collisions. Drivers should reduce speed, increase following distance and ensure headlights are on. Pedestrians are encouraged to use designated crossings and remain alert to changing traffic patterns and reduced driver visibility.

Additionally, rainfall can lead to basement flooding and electrical hazards. Residents should check sump pumps, ensure downspouts are clear and avoid contact with electrical systems in wet areas. If flooding occurs, turn off power to affected areas if it is safe to do so and contact emergency services if needed.
