The already popular interest in local farm fresh foods has surged in the midst of COVID-19 Recovery. There are lots of opportunities to #SupportLocal with more than 1,300 farms across Durham Region growing everything from fruit and vegetables to poultry and eggs to nuts and cattle and sheep and goats and more. Oh my!

Here in Ajax, there are a few farms – Stroud Farms, MacMillan Orchards, Highland Farms, and O’Connor Land & Cattle Co. The first two have direct to public sales in Ajax.

Stroud Farms may be best known for their corn on the cob. For some, the opening of their roadside stand along the east end of the Ajax stretch of Kingston Road is an annual summer milestone – especially when the first corn-filled wagon arrives.

At their main storefront (786 Taunton Road West), you can buy Stroud’s-grown zucchini, garlic, corn, apples, pumpkins, and more as the growing season unfolds, along with a wide selection of offerings from other farms in Durham Region and Southern Ontario. They’re open daily from 9am to 6pm.

It should come as no surprise that MacMillan Orchards is known for its apples. You may not know that their storefront is packed with a wide variety of fresh vegetables and fruits, cheese, jams, jellies, and locally-produced honey. Even bigger is the selection of flash frozen vegetables and fruits, along with meats, including pork, chicken, beef, sausage, fish and seafood. Then there are the desserts, milk, eggs, and more.

MacMillan’s storefront (733 Kingston Road East) is open every day at 9am with closings ranging from 5pm on Sunday to 7pm on Thursday and Friday to 6pm the rest of the week. They are also currently offering curbside pickup for customers who are high risk, immunocompromised or have mobility issues.

So, if you’re looking to add some local farm fresh food to your plates this weekend, look no farther than right here in Ajax. Visit Stroud Farms or MacMillan Orchards and #SupportLocal.
