Here in Ajax, birds are highly valued members of the ecological community. Their presence enlivens our shared space and maintains balance in environmental processes. Preserving and improving the quality of bird communities in Ajax is a priority. Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) reports that local meadow bird and urban wetland bird communities are faring poorly. In TRCA’s 2006 – 2016 Biological Inventory, 74 out of 106 bird species were considered of regional or urban concern.
While environmental pressure is a normal and necessary aspect of natural life, birds are often struggling on an unfair playing field—one that is largely influenced by human activity. Predation and habitat loss are just some of the factors that disadvantage birds and can be addressed to support community recovery.
Predation
Predators like domestic cats and raccoons thrive in urban areas with resources provided by humans. Predator populations continue to increase, presenting a growing threat to birds. Several meadow bird species make their nests on the ground, which creates an even greater risk of predation. When predators are supplied with provisions from humans, such as food waste and intentional feeding, they are not faced with the same pressures as other species and are advantaged against prey.
Habitat Preservation
Currently, meadow habitat space is decreasing, and nest losses are high in these regions. It is important to optimize available space to provide birds with life-sustaining resources and shelter. Creating a bird-friendly environment around the home is a meaningful opportunity to support Ajax’s avian friends and can be done in only a few steps. Learning about local birds and their needs is the first step towards protecting Ajax’s valued, winged residents. Continue reading to learn how you can make a difference!
