Celebrate Earth Month with ten ways to participate online and in-person

The Town’s annual Ajax Green Living Days (GLD) programming encourages residents to work together as a community for a cleaner and greener Ajax. There are many free activities available to participate in this April and May with a focus on workshops about reducing the usage of plastics, various tips on gardening, a community tree planting event, picking up litter during the Spring Clean-Up Challenge and more!

2024 Ajax GLD activities:

  • Just Eat It – Documentary Screening (April 3 | 6 – 7 p.m. | St. Francis Centre, 78 Church Street South): Celebrate the beginning of Earth Month with a fun educational movie night! Join us to learn about the issue of food waste from farm, through retail, all the way to the back of our fridge. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. Reserve your spot here.
  • Reduce Your Plastics Resident Workshop (April 8 | 6 – 7 p.m. | Online): This webinar will explore easy switches you can make to reduce the amount of disposable and plastic waste we produce. From changing our shopping habits to becoming advocates in our community, we have the power as individuals to make a collective difference. Join us for an overview of the tools available to reduce the disposable materials we encounter every day! Join online here.
  • Nature in Your Neighbourhood (April 10 | 6:30 – 8 p.m. | Online): How well do you know your local wildlife? You don’t have to leave the city to experience some of the incredible wildlife living nearby! In partnership with TRCA, learn about the unique traits and adaptations of animals living in and around urban spaces. Also, explore some of the clues wildlife leave behind! Register.
  • Celebrating Earth Week: Vertical Vegetables with Ken Brown (April 23 | 1:30 – 3 p.m. | Ajax Public Library – Audley Branch, 1955 Audley Road): We are celebrating Earth Week with a visit from the ever-popular Ken Brown who will be showing us how we can include Vertical Vegetables into our own growing spaces, no matter how big or small. Registration is now full!
  • Egg Carton Planters (April 25 | 6 – 7 p.m. | Ajax Public Library – Audley Branch, 1955 Audley Road): Plant your way to a happy Earth Day at this fun event, where we will make our own planters out of egg cartons! Drop-in only, no registration required.
  • Community Tree Planting Event (April 27 | 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. | Paulynn Park, 1571 Ravenscroft Road): This is a rain or shine event and will involve the planting of 1350 Native trees. Some shovels will be supplied, and participants can bring their own. High school volunteer hours can be obtained during this event. Register.
  • Compost Giveaway Event (April 27 | 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. | Operations Centre, 800 Salem Road North): While supplies last, residents may fill up to the equivalent of four blue boxes of mulch or compost. It is asked that residents bring their own shovel for this event. Food donations will be accepted, as items will be collected for Feed The Need Durham.
  • Guide to a Healthy Backyard – Tree Stewardship and Care (May 4 | 1 – 3 p.m. | Ajax Community Centre, 75 Centennial Road): Learn the ABC’s of tree care with us for an Ajax Green Living Day event in partnership with TRCA and Ajax SNAP! Discover the importance of tree stewardship, and gain tools and tips to promote tree health and biodiversity for a greener, happier backyard! Register.
  • Provincial Day of Action on Litter (May 14): Take action to reduce the amount of waste going to landfills or becoming litter by bringing awareness to the impacts of waste on our environment and encouraging people to take action at home and in their community.   • Spring Clean-Up Challenge (April - June): The Town’s Spring Clean-Up Toolkits are back and ready for pick up. Help us keep Ajax clean and green. If you want to participate, contact operations@ajax.ca or 905-683-2951 to pick up your toolkit (gloves and bags) today.

  • Ajax prides itself on environmental sustainability and those efforts have continued throughout each year.
  • The gardening event is available in-person at the Ajax Public Library – Audley Branch. Registration is required.
  • High school students have the opportunity to earn volunteer hours at the Community Tree Planting Event.
