COVID-19 Ajax Updates

The Town collects property taxes for the Region of Durham, the Province (education) and the Town of Ajax in accordance with Town bylaws and policies. See an interactive example of how your Taxes are divided within the Town, the Region and Province by visiting the Tax Calculator.

Town taxes provide local services such as road maintenance, fire and emergency services, libraries and recreation programs.

There are multiple methods of payment

Current due dates

The Town of Ajax has made the decision to waive tax payment penalties for 60 days effective immediately for all residents and businesses.

The two month grace period will begin on the April installment with no penalty or interest charged for May or June. In addition, insufficient funds and pre-authorized fees will be waived.

If you have sent a post-dated cheque or have signed up for pre-authorized payments, please contact the Town by April 5, 2020. 

The 2020 Interim Residential Tax Bill is due in two instalments:

  • February 28, 2020
  • April 24, 2020
  • Bills are mailed in late January

The 2020 Final Residential Tax Bill is due in two instalments:

  • July 31, 2020
  • September 25, 2020
  • Bills are mailed in late June

Property assessments and appeals (MPAC)

Property assessment is the responsibility of the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC). To appeal your property assessment, or if you have any questions about your assessment, please contact MPAC at 1-866-296-6722.

Senior homeowners property tax grant

The Senior Homeowners' Property Tax Grant is an annual amount offered by the Province of Ontario to help offset property taxes for seniors with low and moderate incomes who own their own homes. 

Senior homeowners apply for the grant when they file their personal income tax return. For more information contact the Ministry of Revenue at 1-800-337-7222.

Tax rates and user fees

There are three parts to the tax rate:

  • Municipal tax rate, set by the Town of Ajax
  • Regional tax rate, set by the Region of Durham
  • Education tax rate, set by the Province of Ontario

User fees are charged for various service requests.
