The revitalization of the steam plant as a district energy facility that would produce up to 25 megawatts of electricity, along with steam for district heating purposes by Index Energy located at 170 Mills Road is anticipated to be operational in February 2015.

The majority of equipment, within the building and on-site that will generate electricity has been installed. This equipment needs to be cleaned, tested and calibrated.

Some of the equipment will be cleaned using compressed air. The compressed air will be released through a regulator equipped with a silencer located at the north end of the property. Despite the use of a silencer, the release of compressed air will generate noise levels of 90 decibels, which is comparable to noise generated by a lawn mower or a hair dryer.

This is scheduled to occur between Tuesday, January 27, 2015 and Saturday, January 31, 2015 (5 days) between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. Over this period, the release of compressed air will occur in 25 to 30 minute intervals, lasting 5 to 6 minutes.  A horn will sound off twice three minutes and once one minute prior to the release of compressed air for safety purposes.

The Town requests the cooperation of area residents and business owners during this test period and regret any inconvenience this may cause. The Index Energy Steam Plant is one of the key projects in the development of the New Downtown Ajax. Once operational, it will produce clean energy, continuing with the Town’s priority to be a leader in environmental sustainability.
