Installing a pool? Landscaping your yard? Looking to store a "pod" on the road? If the answer is yes, then it is the responsibility of any resident, business or contractor to apply for a road occupancy permit when you are carrying out construction work on the road or boulevard (the area between your property line and the road) or using a road or boulevard for any purpose other than allowed parking.

What work does this include?

  • Construction activities on the road or boulevard
  • Temporary partial or full road closure
  • Temporary parking/ storage of construction related equipment/ materials on the road or boulevard
  • Utility repairs or installations
  • Temporary placement of dumpsters or storage bins on the road or boulevard
  • Parades
  • Driveway widening within the boulevard (apron widening)
  • Newspaper box installations

What is NOT permitted?

  • Landscaping or altering of boulevards including but not limited to paving, interlocking bricks, artificial turf, river rocks, shrubs, etc.
  • Installation of decorative tree rings
  • Installation of any material other than grass or seed
  • Landscaping within 3 metres (10 feet) of any boulevard tree including landscaping on private property
  • Storage of materials or equipment within 3 metres (10 feet) of any boulevard tree
  • Installation of sprinkler systems

How to apply for a Road Occupancy permit

  • Submit a Road Occupancy Permit Application together with:
  • the required fee of $203.10
  • a Liability Insurance Certificate for a minimum of $2,000,000 naming the Town of Ajax as an additional insured
  • a traffic management plan and detour route for Town approval, in accordance with Book 7, Ontario Traffic Manual as amended
  • Where applicable, approved engineered drawings for the proposed work

 Road Closure Checklist

  • Complete a Road Occupancy Permit application and request a road closure.  (Note all closures up to 30 days must be approved by the Manager of Engineering and all closures greater than 30 days must be approved by Council.)
  • Provide a liability insurance certificate for a minimum of $2,000,000, naming the Town of Ajax as an additional insured.
  • Provide a traffic management plan and detour route for Town approval, in accordance with Book 7, Ontario Traffic Manual as amended.
  • Supply and post signs along the approaches with the details of the closure including road name, dates of closure and contact information - at least 10 days in advance of the closure.
  • Notify police, emergency medical services, waste collection and recycling, fire, Ajax Operations, transit services, school buses, etc. regarding closure dates and detour routes - at least 10 days in advance of the closure.
  • Formally notify all individual residents, organizations and businesses affected by the closure regarding closure dates and detour routes - at least 10 days in advance of the closure.
  • Supply, install and maintain all signs, barricades, traffic control devices, flag persons and other equipment/ persons as required for the proper and safe movement and control of pedestrians and vehicles.

Penalty for Unauthorized Work

Anyone who undertakes work within the boulevard and/or roadway, without permission from the Town, is subject to a fine and will be responsible for restoring the boulevard and/or roadway to its original condition, including all costs of the restoration.
