Ajax is committed to creating a more sustainable future by lowering greenhouse gas emissions

The Town of Ajax is gearing up for an energy-saving initiative with the launch of its first-ever Battle of the Buildings competition, running from September 1 to December 31, 2025.

Residents, staff and community members are invited to join the competition to help shape a greener tomorrow, one smart habit at a time. The goal is to focus on low-cost and no-cost behaviour-based actions across facilities and reduce energy consumption by at least 10% through everyday operational improvements.

At the end of the competition, Town staff will evaluate the results and recognize the winning facility for their contributions to lowering the Town’s emissions.

QUICK FACTS

  • In celebration of National Energy Efficiency Day and as a part of the Town's Battle of the Buildings friendly competition, join Ajax for a fun, environmentally-friendly Bike Smoothie Station! Stop by on Wednesday, October 1, 2025 from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the Ajax Community Centre, Upper Lobby (75 Centennial Rd.). Hop on a bike and pedal to blend your smoothie! The energy you generate will spin the blender blades, and after a short ride, your smoothie is ready! There will also be electric vehicle test drives, E-Scooter and E-Bike demos and more!

  • The initiative invites TOA staff and facility users across Ajax to reduce energy consumption by at least 10% through everyday operational improvements.
  • This is part of Ajax’s corporate commitment to lower greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 20% below 2019 levels by the end of 2025.
  • Some ways that residents can contribute to the energy-saving initiative are:
    • Spot a leak? Speak up! Let staff know if you notice dripping taps/showers, open doors or anything that might waste energy.
    • Keep facility doors closed to help maintain temperature settings.
    • Reducing hot water use in changing rooms lowers energy and water consumption.
    • A small change. A big difference. Did you know that by lowering the pool temperature by just 2°C (as per Ontario Standards), we can save over $20,000 annually in energy costs?
    • Participating facilities are Ajax Community Centre, Audley Recreation Centre, McLean Community Centre, Ajax Town Hall, Ajax Operations Centre and Ajax Public Library – Main Branch.
    • The competition will be monitored through Ajax’s energy management software, which will track performance across participating buildings in real-time.
