Residents encouraged to experience (virtual) fireworks this Victoria Day long weekend
Be a part of an Ontario-wide, staged augmented reality fireworks display while keeping your family safe

Due to COVID-19, the Town of Ajax is not currently processing fireworks permits & permits for the sale of fireworks – so we are partnering with SNAPD to bring the show to you!

Fireworks are dangerous and contribute to burn injuries and other fire-related incidents. During these unprecedented times, Ajax Fire and Emergency Services (AFES) are asking residents for their help to prevent avoidable personal injuries and fire-related incidents by not discharging fireworks or attending informal neighbourhood displays.

Instead, visit the Victoria Day Virtual Fireworks event page at ajax.ca/townevents and join your neighbours across the province on May 18 at 8 p.m. to enjoy a spectacular augmented fireworks display from the comfort of your own home. Help SNAPD to set a World Record for the largest simultaneous augmented reality experience ever!

QUOTES

“The COVID-19 pandemic has presented a unique opportunity to get creative about how traditional events like long weekend fireworks are delivered. We are excited to be working with SNAPD for the Victoria Day virtual fireworks – blending a beloved tradition with modern technology to come together as a community, even when we are apart.” – Poonam Swift, Community Recreation & Culture Coordinator, Town of Ajax

“Every year, we see burn injuries and property damage as a result of the misuse of fireworks. Even hand held sparklers are dangerous. They can reach temperatures hot enough to bake a cake. We have to remember that although they are available to be purchased, it doesn’t mean they are safe”. - Shelley Langer, Fire Prevention Inspector, Town of Ajax

QUICK FACTS

  • The Town of Ajax has suspended processing fireworks permits & permits for the sale of fireworks as a result of COVID-19.
  • Residents are required to follow the 2 metre physical distancing guidelines from the Province of Ontario.
  • Hand held sparklers burn extremely hot - as hot as 1200 °F (648.9 ° C) - and can ignite clothing, cause blindness and result in severe burns.
