On January 1, 1955, the Town of Ajax was incorporated. Over the past 70 years, Ajax has grown into a diverse community that excels in fostering a vibrant local economy.

We invite community members to join us as we mark this special occasion of events, activities, and commemorative projects over the course of the year.

70th Anniversary Community Tree Planting - April 26, 2025

In celebration of the Town of Ajax’s 70th anniversary, we partnered with TRCA and Trees for Life for a community tree planting event at the Greenwood Conversation Lands (Brock South). 700 native trees and shrubs were planted to form a maple leaf, creating a “Welcome Forest” for new Canadians and to celebrate the Town, the Canadian flag and all those who have chosen to call Ajax home.

 Quizzes & Cocktails Trivia - April 25 & November 12, 2025

Back by popular demand – Friday Night Live Quizzes & Cocktails Trivia! Be sure to brush up on your knowledge of Ajax’s History as each event will feature a special round of Town Trivia to celebrate our anniversary!

 70th Anniversary Ride (Tour d'Ajax) - June to October 2025

In celebration of our 70th anniversary, we are excited to announce the launch of a new trail route in June. This route will take visitors on a journey through Ajax's rich history, featuring stops at historical plaque locations throughout the Town. Along the way, participants will have the opportunity to explore and appreciate the beauty of Ajax's trail system, which has been meticulously designed to offer a unique and engaging experience for all. Join us in commemorating this milestone and discover the stories that have shaped our community.  

The Biking, Walking and Driving routes will be available to the public from June 22 till October 1, 2025. 

Fairgrounds Grand Opening - September 19, 2025

Join us for a celebration of the Town of Ajax’s 70th Anniversary and the official opening of the Ajax Fairgrounds on September 19 from 6 to 9:15 p.m. This event will feature our first ever Drone Show at 9 p.m. to celebrate the occasion!

Ajax Spirit Walk - September 26, 2025 
Take a step back in time to discover Ajax's rich history and heritage. Along this free guided walking tour, you will encounter "Spirits" who will provide historical details about the various people, places, stories and headlines, that shaped Ajax. The tour starts at the Rotary Park Pavilion (177 Lake Driveway West) and guests will be travelling for approximately 1 hour and will be returned to the Rotary Park Pavilion by shuttle bus. Registration is required – click here to get more information. 
Silver Screen Sundays - Ajax 70th Anniversary Series

The St. Francis Centre brings back Silver Screen Sundays for a special 70th anniversary series, showcasing classic films made in 1955. 

  • Sunday, October 26 – Rebel Without a Cause starring James Dean, Natalie Wood and Sal Mineo 
  • Sunday, November 9 – The Seven Year Itch starring Marilyn Monroe and Tom Ewell 
  • Sunday, December 14 – Walt Disney’s Lady and the Tramp

70th Anniversary Free Swims & Skates

We are excited to offer 7 free swim and skate sessions throughout 2025. Upcoming events include:

  • Sunday December 21, 2025 – Public Skate - 12:15pm - 2:05pm - ACC
  • Sunday December 21, 2025 – Public Swim - :10-3:30pm & 3:45-5:30pm – ARC 

We're also coming together to support those facing food insecurity. If you can, please bring a non-perishable food item to donate. All proceeds collected will contribute to the Salvation Army’s efforts to help our community.

1. Indigenous Roots

Honouring the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation, whose presence continues to shape our community.

2. Ajax by the Lake

Celebrating the town’s identity.

3. HMS Ajax & WWII

Commemorating the HMS Ajax and the Battle of the River Plate, a pivotal WWII naval victory.

4. Defence Industries & Bomb Girls

Highlighting the vital role of Defence Industries Limited and the “bomb girls” who produced over 40 million munitions units.

5. Naming Ajax

Exploring how the town was named after HMS Ajax, with streets honouring the ships and crews of Ajax, Achilles, and Exeter.

6. Incorporation (1955)

Marking the official incorporation of Ajax on January 1st, 1955, and the beginning of local self-governance.

7. Post-War Growth

Recognizing the community’s decision to retain housing and services after WWII, leading to Ajax’s municipal status.

8. First Public Library

Celebrating the opening of Ajax’s first library in 1952, a hub for learning and connection.

9. Ajax Pickering Hospital

Honouring the hospital’s role as a lifeline for families since 1966.

10. GO Station

Highlighting the opening of the Ajax GO Station in 1988, connecting the town to the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area.

11. Ajax Downs

Showcasing the proud history of quarter horse racing, from Picov Downs (1969) to Ajax Downs (2006).

12. Sum 41

Celebrating local talent, with Sum 41’s rise from Ajax garage jams to international rock stardom.

13. Pan Am Games

Remembering the legacy of the 2015 Pan Am Games, including new sports facilities and a thriving volunteer program.

14. Recreation Spaces

Showcasing Ajax’s commitment to top-quality recreation spaces for active living and community wellness.

15. Culinary Diversity

Highlighting Ajax’s vibrant food scene, with over 250 restaurants, cafés, bakeries, and breweries.
