Are you feeling inspired to participate in the many activities offered at our Fitness & Health Centres? You’ve completed your equipment orientation session, participated in your first Ab Clinic, and now you’re eager and ready to take your performance to the next level. How important is hydration to your fitness goals? More important than you might realize.

Why should you stay hydrated?

Your body depends on water to survive. Did you know that water makes up more than half of your body weight? Every cell, tissue and organ in your body needs water to function properly. Water is essential for good overall health and essential for an effective and safe workout at our Fitness & Health Centres. Without adequate hydration, you can suffer from cramps, low energy, loss of strength, decreased focus and potential injuries.

How can you stay hydrated?
  • Drink plenty of water—at least eight 8oz glasses a day, and more when you’re exercising.
  • Eat a diet high in fresh vegetables and fruits. Processed foods, which are usually high in sodium and other unnecessary additives, can dehydrate you.
  • Drink fluids within an hour before your exercise session.
  • Drink fluids during your workout to replace fluid loss from sweating.
What is best to drink?

Water should always be your first choice. Try spring water that contains minerals, which boost hydration. Another great option is 100% natural coconut water. It contains electrolytes, specifically potassium and sodium, which help rehydrate the body after strenuous exercise.

What about juice, sports drinks, and soda pops?

Concentrated fruit juice is not a great option because the processing of juices removes vitamins, minerals and fibre. Eating the whole fruit is more hydrating and nutritious. Sports drinks often contain refined sugars, artificial colours and chemicals. Soda pops have no nutritional value and can contain refined sugars, artificial sweeteners and other harmful chemicals.

When it comes to hydration, water is always the best option. By drinking enough water and eating a healthy diet, you’ll feel hydrated and energized throughout the day and during your workout.
